Dear ABINITioners,
Perhaps many of you would be interested in a CECAM workshop
"First-Principles Simulations: Perspectives and Challenges in Mineral
Sciences" that will take place in the CECAM centre, (Lyon, France) from
27 September to 1 October 2004 - see information below and the website
of the Workshop (http://www.wrc.man.ac.uk/cecam/):
SCIENTIFIC CONTENT
The main topics of the workshop will be
*latest developments and prospects of theory and methodology from
physics and chemistry *perspectives(advanced electronic structure
methods, metadynamics, excited states, ab initio thermodynamics);
*recent advances in the application of these methods to the minerals
sciences, with particular attention to extreme conditions in planetary
interiors and to processes at mineral surfaces;
*materials whose electronic and/or crystallographic structure pose
significant problems to theory (e.g. strongly correlated systems,
incommensurate phases, quasicrystals, and non-collinear magnets).
ORGANISERS
Artem R. Oganov, ETH Zurich
Michele C. Warren, University of Manchester
Bjoern Winkler, University of Frankfurt
PARTICIPATION
Registration: please email m.c.warren@man.ac.uk if you would like to
attend and the title of any work that you would like to present. The
number of participants will be kept to below 40. Note, however, that
there are only a few places left. Most participants are expected to give
a talk and to submit an extended abstract for publication (see below).
There is no registration charge for the workshop. Regrettably, we are
only able to contribute to the expenses of a very small number of
participants. Therefore, if there are exceptional reasons why you will
need funding, please let us know as soon as possible and we will try to
help with part of your costs. Information about CECAM can be found at
www.cecam.fr, including details of cheap accommodation in the on-site
hostel and other options.
