Try "make optic": abinit has a makefile scheme which takes care of all the 
dependencies. I just tried the 4.4.2 version again, and it works fine. 
Make sure your makefile_macros file is correct and complete.

Otherwise the executables are included in the binary packages on the web 
site http://www.abinit.org/package/?text=summary
