If you use the xlf compiler (IBM or MacOSX machines) you will need the following compiler option starting 4.5.3:
-qsuffix=f=f90

for details. Add this argument to the end of the FFLAGS variable in makefile_macros.
Up to now we were catering to xlf conventions and compiling only files suffixed .f, but this is not standard at all, and dirty.
