Tired of trying the ifort compiler both 9.0 and 8.03, I just gave up and set
a different instalation of abinit. This time, using the PGI compiler version
5 for the sequential code. Compiled! It was tens of time faster (took about
two hours compiling), pass all the tests (with the make tests), generated the
executables correctly, and the makefile model, makefile_macros.PGI_dummy
worked with minor modifications.
Machine: Pentium III 1.13 GHz - cluster with 6 nodes/12 processors running
Fedora Core 1 kernel 2.4.22. Used Portland Compiler version 5.0 - pfg90.

Thank you for the patience. I will continue to try to compile abinit using
ifort and will report if any sucess is achieved.

Ivan
