I think the best way would be to compile on your own machine so that
big file is enabled by default. It may be a problem of the PGI
compiler or a problem of the librarries use for in/out that lead to
this big file problem. The best might be to use your newly installed
gcc to compile.

I have upgraded the linux kernel and ext3, so now I can produce files
larger than 2GB. Running the abinis binary downloaded from the abinit site
(linux-intel-pgi, version: 4.6.5) however the problem still occurs. Is
there a downloadable binary somewhere compiled with large file support, or
should I compile abinit from source? Or s there something else I'm not
doing right?

cheers,
Denes
