1)Power5 are one of the test platform at pcpm.
2) With a decent network and a large number of k-point there is no
problem to run abinit in parallel on a large number of nodes (I
personnaly have never used more than 1024 cpu >= 256 nodes)
3) Abinit 5.2 is supposed to compile out of the box fine on such
machine yet, if you came over some problem you might be interested in
reading a recent thread (1-3 weeks) on parallel compilation on IBM
machine.

I just got an account at a new supercomputer complex here. One
machine is a Power 5 SR11000 model K1 Hitachi machine and the other
is an IBM Blue Gene Solution machine. The machines have very
impressive specs 2.15 Tflops for the Hitachi and 57.3 Tflops for the
Blue Gene, however, I suspect that abinit will only run efficiently
on a single node of the Hitachi (I would love to hear otherwise).
There are 16 power 5 cpus per node. I was curious if anyone had
compiled abinit on this (sort of) machine, e.g. a Power 5 and had any
advice as to what flags etc. to set.
