without more intensive debugging it's hard to tell what the problem is. I have had similar problems probably due to simultaneous access of a file by 2 nodes. Over nfs is the worst, but even 2 processors locally on a scratch disk have caused a crash. Mine usually turned up a bit later, when trying to read in npw (gave random or garbage data, and rwwf complained). This was 5.3.2 on MacOSX +xlf90 compiler. You may try to play with localrdwf:

It looks like your file is genuinely corrupt or absent, check the disks for space and the size the files should have.
