What MPI implementations can the precompiled binaries be used with?

I can't seem to find a straight answer as to whether an MPI application
compiled against one MPI implementation can run on another, which makes me
wonder how I could even run the precompiled abinip binary. Do I need a
particular MPI implementation, or will I be fine with any of them?

(I'm hoping I can make an end-run around the problems I've been having with
compiling ABINIT.)
