In the src directory

$ grep -r 'etotal_predict'

shows that these abinit variables occurs in the findmin subroutine.

That subroutine apparently minimizes functions. Both etotal_predict and lambda_predict are part of the output for the function; they are the value of the function and the value of the argument, respectively. The names of the variables seem to refer to some relatively standard notation (think Feynman-Hellman). Cheers,
