Thanks, I am even further in your debt. This indeed does work.

Is there a way to know from the CIF file alone that one has to change natrd to 2? I might have figured this out for spacegroup 227, but if I'm using an arbitrary spacegroup, how do I know? Do I just need to keep a big database of every spacegroup, and the corresponding values? I would like to be able to set this up to use a minimum of user intervention.

I'll spend some time reading through the relevant test files, as you suggested.
