For example, 
VASP Data Viewer (http://vaspview.sourceforge.net/) might be helpful
for this purpose. Please take a look at the note
        ~ABINIT/Infos/Miscellaneous/VASP_Data_View 
in the ABINIT tar.gz ball.

XCrysDen (http://www-k3.ijs.si/kokalj/xc/XCrySDen.html)  might appears
better for visualization, but this is not an open-source... 
(not "free" in general ...)

I would also be curious about other tools ...
