Hello,

I use XCrysDen for the moment. It's fairly powerful:

http://www-k3.ijs.si/kokalj/xc/XCrySDen.html

There are many different platforms (it's all in Tcl/Tk), and cut3d has
output formats for it.

The 3-D density representations are excellent (you need Open GL / Mesa).
However, you can only cut along the (100) (010) or (001) directions for
contour plots.

Otherwise I've used scilab (free matlab lookalike for linux)

http://www.scilab.org/

OK for contour plots, and outputs .ps files, but you have to make a small
script file to put your density data in the right matrices, etc...
(exactly like matlab).
