I've noticed it before too. I even tried to convert the text format to 
unix but to no avail. But the VEND program from the VENUS package 
(http://homepage.mac.com/fujioizumi/visualization/VENUS.html) does read 
those xsf files.

Would anyone care to ask the xcrysden developer why this happens ?
