There is many possible error one can do when installing MPI and thne building abinip.
It is possible that someone can help you further if you send  your:
configure.log
and
configuration command or file ( hostname.ac)

thanks a lot for the clarifications about the parallelization on multicore cpus. I tried also with the path in which MPI is installed (--with-mpi-prefix=/usr/lib/mpich or /usr/lib/openmpi).
In both cases when the configure script looks for an usable library, the check action doesn't find what it needs.
I'm compiling with gfortran and the Open-MPI and MPICH libraries installed from binaries on a Linux Ubuntu distribution.
