In ABINIT 4 there was no install mechanism, you had to do it manually and thus could do whatever you wanted. Thus no need to uninstall.

Now when you type "make install" for a version x.y.z of ABINIT, the files are installed in ${prefix}/abinit/x.y, which means e.g. that version 5.3.5 will overwrite 5.3.4, but version 5.4.3 will just coexist peacefully with 5.3.5. Thus, still no need to uninstall, but know that the old version will be made unvailable in some cases.

This behaviour has been chosen because a version x.y.(z+1) is supposed to contain only bugfixes wrt x.y.z.
