there is an mpif.h in a directory of some other programme. But this is some
old remnant.

Apart from this, there is no mpif.h on my file system. I did not compile
mpich myself but used YaST.
mpif90 -show gives gfortran as the compiler. The abinit configure also finds
the gnu fortran compiler.

It looks like your installation of mpich is incomplete. You might try
to find where (if anywhere) the mpif.h file was put (find / -name
mpif.h) and copy it to /opt/mpich/ch-p4/include If you have a copy of
mpif90 you should have the rest - you compiled mpich yourself? And
with the same fortran compiler to be used for abinit?
