That has done the trick! mpif.h is indeed in the devel package. I could
install it with YaST and now it compiles without problems. Internal tests are
ok.

I can now start a job with abinip, but it is using only one processor (there
are 2 and I have multiple k-points). How can I get abinip to use more
processors?

If it's like for Debian, they put the mpif.h in the -devel packages.
