I tried that one. The configure script of mpich does not accept the argument 
FC=xlf95.

You should probably try:

  ../configure FC=xlf95 F77=xlf95 F90=xlf95

This depends a lot on the way your cluster is configured. There is sometimes
no need of SSH. In any case, you'll only see it at run-time.
