The same compiler error happens for pawinit and others in the paw directory. By lowering the optimization to -O1 or -O0 the files end up compiling but this is still not satisfactory, as the pristine distribution compiles and the compiler is otherwise pretty robust.
Curiouser and curiouser.

Hello all:
Has anyone else come upon this compiler error on alpha (EV56 "tux" machine with alpha-linux)? And perhaps fixed it? Or seen where it comes from? The pristine distribution has compiled before successfully, and I haven't touched the invars2m.F90 file in question... It must come from elsewhere.
/usr/bin/cpp -C -Ddec_alpha -Dnolib -P -traditional invars2m.F90 >
invars2m_cpp.f
fort -free -convert big_endian -O4 -arch host -tune host -C -c invars2m_cpp.f
Assertion failure: Compiler internal error - please submit problem report
GEM ASSERTION, Compiler internal error - please submit problem report
Fatal error in: /usr/lib/compaq/cfal/decfort90 Terminated
make[2]: *** [invars2m.o] Error 3

Thanks
