Episode III:

the compiler error is caused by using the bounds checking option "-C" with 
the optimization. For most routines this is ok, but a few make the whole 
deal crash. As -C is mostly a debugging option it isn't used in the 
makefile_macros, and everyone is safe. Still, it shouldn't be crashing the 
compiler.
