You're right it looks like there may be a problem. I see no distinction between x86_64 and i686 packets on the abinit web site. Have you try pgi and intel compiled binaries?
Otherwise you still have the option to compile it yourself. And I can obviously help you if you plan to do this and need some help.

That sounds reasonable that I won't be able to use a 64 bit version, but do you know where I get a 32-bit?  The Abinit website only has one download option for g95 compilers that I can see.
