old versions of pgi can no longer compile abinit because of some optional argument bugs in the compiler (before 6.2-something). This does not appear to be your problem, though.

one of the main differences in 5.4.4p is that abinit will no longer stop if it is too old (18months). Check some of the log files to see if this is not the problem in the straight 5.4.4 case.

For the rest, both Samuel and Guangfu will need to be more precise with respect to platform/architecture and which tests crash. We have tested 5.4.4 on a wide variety of platform combinations by now...
