I think the problem is derived from pgi fortran compiler, so you can try another compiler like ifort,

In my experience, ifort10.1 + openmpi could take better compatibility

chokes like that  is the Linux stacksize limitation. Look at ulimit
command and maybe issue a ulimit -s unlimited. No guarantee.
